TESOL Clinically Rich Intensive Teacher Institute (CR-ITI) at Touro College

The Touro College TESOL Clinically Rich Intensive Teacher Institute (CR-ITI) is a unique one-year cohort program for twenty eligible NYCDOE teachers to earn additional certification, in TESOL, with considerable tuition support. The goal of the program is to provide high needs communities with specialized and certified teachers to work with English Language learners.

Candidates work with a mentor-teacher to provide on-going support and guidance in the classroom. A Touro TESOL faculty academic advisor supports their matriculation through the program and preparation for the NYS content specialty test.

Who Can Apply?

To apply you must:

  • Be recommended by your principal
  • Be dedicated to helping serve ELLs
  • Be a certified teacher working in the NYCDOE
  • Have proof of experience with content coursework

Curriculum

The certificate curriculum is five courses:

  • EDPN 673 Methods and Material for Teaching English as a Second Language
  • EDDN 639 Trends and Current Issues in Second Language Acquisition
  • EDDN 637 Second Language Learners and the Content Areas
  • EDPN 671 Theory and Practice of Bilingual and Multicultural Education (online)
  • EDDN 635 Curriculum Development and Classroom Management (online)

How to Apply:

The 2019 cohort began in February and the application for the 2019 cohort is now closed. Please check back in Summer/Fall 2019 for the application for the 2020 cohort.

Become a Mentor Teacher

As a mentor-teacher you will receive a $645 stipend for each program candidate you mentor, as well as a tablet computer for use in your work. Mentor-Teachers will receive an orientation and participate in monthly professional development/mentoring cohort sessions.

Eligibility to Become a Mentor Teacher:

  • Certified in TESOL or bilingual education
  • At least three (3) years’ experience as an ESL or BLE teacher
  • Recommended by your school principal
  • Meet NYS Mentoring Standards
  • Skilled at using multiple forms of student assessment data
  • Effective use of Common Core and the NYS Next Generation P-12 Learning Standards in lesson planning
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Willing to travel to support your mentees
