Biography

Sheldon Shuch, Ph.D. is an educator, editor of educational materials, and consultant with a wide range of experience in schools both in New York City and throughout the country with expertise in many areas including grant writing, proposal development and evaluation, program implementation and school reform. 

Dr. Shuch was previously Director of Funded Programs for Community School District Five in New York City where he administered a budget of almost $22 million and was responsible for the oversight of programs in 18 schools.  Other responsibilities included liaison to develop and support programs with numerous institutions of higher education, such as Teacher’s College, Bank Street College, New York University, The City College and many community based organizations.

Since gaining his a Ph.D. from Fordham University with a specialization in curriculum and teaching and receiving his administrative certification on both the school and district level, Dr. Shuch served in a variety of positions including Director of Reading, and Director of Instruction and Professional Development for District Five.  In these varied posts he gained valuable expertise in not only teaching and learning but also school reform.   In addition, Dr. Shuch served as Principal of a suburban, private religious school, grades K-10, for 20 years.

An excellent communicator, Dr. Shuch has developed and received funding for many significant grants, including awards of $1.8 million for a 21^st. Century Community Learning Center, one of only three grants awarded in 2001 by the U.S. Dept. of Education in NYC, $1.2 million for a Technology Grant and $200,000 for a Targeted Professional Development Grant from New York State as well as funding for Reading First and the Comprehensive Demonstration School Reform Proposals. Recently, he contributed the educational components for grants submitted by Tutor.com, funded for over $425,000 for Online Tutoring Services. In addition, Dr. Shuch represented the district at many conferences and meetings. He has also been responsible for the evaluation of programs for a number of organizations including the Queens borough Public Library and The Reading Team.

He has been a consultant to many companies, including Scholastic, Lightspan, Globe-Fearon, Harcourt Brace, Inc., Tutor.com, Salvadori Center for Education and the Built Environment, the New York Press Club Foundation, Classroom Inc., The Millennium Group, and to school systems including, most recently, the Cleveland Public Schools, the Rockland Teachers Center and the Renaissance Charter School.  He was the senior consultant for the Reading Assessment System developed and published by Options, Inc. for grades 3-8 and distributed to schools throughout the United States.

As an Associate Professor at the City College Graduate School of Education, Dr. Shuch taught in its citywide program for the development of future school administrators at the Central Board’s headquarters. Recently he worked as a Clinical Field Supervisor at Manhattanville College assigned to new teachers to support their transition to the field of education and as an Associate Professor in the Masters in Teaching Literacy Program at Touro College, where he is now employed full time on the teaching faculty.

He is also the editor of three nonfiction books published in the past few years.
